How pest & environmental work is bought

Pest and environmental work covers pest control, mould remediation, asbestos and hazardous materials testing and abatement, and water and fire restoration. Public buyers need it in schools, housing, hospitals, offices and older buildings. In this group, the right licences and safety paperwork often matter as much as price.

How is this work bought?

Pest control is usually a recurring service contract: scheduled visits to a set of buildings plus call-outs, for one to three years. Hazardous materials work is mostly tied to projects. Before a renovation or demolition, buyers order surveys for asbestos, lead and other materials, then tender the abatement. Mould and restoration work is often bought on call, through standing offers or prequalified lists, because it's urgent when it's needed.

What do buyers check?

Licences and training first. Pest control applicators need provincial certification, and asbestos work is regulated, with licensing for abatement contractors in some provinces. Expect to show exposure control plans, the safe work procedures you follow, waste disposal arrangements and proof of training for your crew. Restoration buyers ask about response times, equipment and moisture testing.

Because the risks are high, buyers read safety records closely. A clear safety program makes a real difference in this group.

When is it tendered?

Pest control contracts come up when their term ends. Hazardous materials surveys and abatement follow capital projects, so they cluster ahead of the summer construction season. Restoration work arrives with floods and fires, so being on a list before it happens is the only way to get it.
